On courage

From Mr Smash, something to remember these days:

Courage is not the absence of fear. To the contrary, courage involves recognizing danger, but acting on the realization that danger must be confronted —or it will find you when you are least prepared.

So many things in life scare us,so many people prey on our fears. Politicians give us fear as justification, cowards use fear to restrain us,we use fear to avoid living.

The coward strikes at those he perceives as weak, hides under words and justifications, uses lies and tantrums, ignores the rights of others, and retreats under walls of hate and self-righteousness.

Courage is simpler,harder,nobler.

Mary Daly says,“• Courage is like —it’s a habitus,a habit,a virtue:you get it by courageous acts. It’s like you learn to swim by swimming. You learn courage by couraging.”What if it’s not harder? Not harder than swimming. Or doing dishes? Or taking six steps toward 1600 steps up a mountain.

Nice blog. Found it randomly because I also take odd comfort in the postmodern poetry of some spam.

    Cheers.

  • Gwen, you are so absolutely right. Being corageous implies the existence of a threat, and facing that fear.

I am researching that quote from Mary Daly. Thanks.

I guess it’s like anything else, you have to get past the grandiose connotations so get at the real meaning.
