There is a net of three dimensions, vast and wide stretching in all four directions throughout the universe. At each point that a string meets another point of the net there is a jewel, and this jewel reflects in it all the other jewels of the entire net, and further that reflection too is reflected in all the facets of all the other jewels.

No single part of the net can be independent of the rest; a single movement of the net in one place will affect, in some way, the most distant part of the net or universe. The all is reflected in the one, the one in the all

This affair is like the bright sun in the blue sky, shining clearly, changeless and motionless, without diminishing or increasing. It shines everywhere in the daily activities of everyone, appearing in everything. Though you try to grasp it, you cannot get it; though you try to abandon it, it always remains. It is vast and unobstructed, utterly empty. Like a gourd floating on water, it cannot be reined in or held down. Since ancient times, when good people of the Path have attained this, they’ve appeared and disappeared in the sea of birth and death, able to use it fully. There is no deficit or surplus: like cutting up sandalwood, each piece is it.

“Aikido,” my teacher had said again and again, “is the art of reconciliation. Whoever has the mind to fight has broken his connection with the universe. If you try to dominate people, you are already defeated. We study how to resolve conflict, not how to start it.”

We are all engaging in some sort of speech, and choose which it is that we are going to use: Divisive, or reconciling? Abusive, or affectionate? It is all about choice, and we all have a choice.

We forget that we have a choice, no matter how dire the situation. the person that chooses to stay in front of impossible odds, the Arab man that helps the Jewish community during Nazi occupation, the Holocaust survivor that dies while helping others escape. We may not have a choice in how we die, but we all have a choice on how we live. The acceptance of that which is different, the non-violent examination of our path, the right speech, all of these are so easy – yet so difficult.

“Form is empty. Emptiness [sunyata] is form. The action [karma] of form is not other than emptiness, nor is the action of emptiness other than form. Of this nature are also feeling, cognition, conception, and consciousness.”
