Cumbia pa’los muertos!

Colombian music at Captain’s Crate.

Cinco De Mayo is just around the corner, use it as an excuse to turn these tracks into a house-party or a back yard BBQ and dance for the dead.

We will dance for the dead.

Silence

I answered the questions of the official appointed to the case,slowly,methodically,pausedly.\I remember all that. Why did you wait,he asks, and then,I have to look to my left. I am at a loss for words, and my eyes suddenly fill with the uncomfortable sting of tears, the unspoken admission of permanent [...]

Bamboo

…I come from a country where you can easily get one hundred different fruits, none of them exotic there, and the memories of which make my soul wax nostalgic and my mind travel for a second or two. No,not a fruit. It makes me nostalgic and pensive.

I was thinking more about the lines [...]

Merry Holidays?

David talks about the issue with holidays, and our bland and politically correct wishes. This is the comment I posted there:I agree with that,by wishing only Happy Holidays,we get mired in the PC of our times, neglecting to acknowledge our differences and to speak through them. Although I do recognize that different [...]

Pack and flee

Well,Jim,is a list, but not as we know it.
I didn’t even have to make the choice, now that is. I had already did what the post suggested, and to my incredible surprise, the books that I took with me were ones that came with emotional reasons, the ones heavy with memories and hopes.
1. Talleres de la infancia:antologia del juguete,a lot of stories to remember roots and childhood. No pictures, just tales.
2. Cien años de soledad,by Garcia Marquez
3. Mathematical Biology,by Jim Murray.
4. Oxford Book of English Verse.
5. A Heinlein:Stranger in a strange land.
That’s it. Then I arrived here and started to ship my books from wherever it is that I came, and buy more. But that is another story.

London living

When I was living in London,I spent a lot of time and money at Heal’s and Habitat, looking for the perfect Indian bed throw, that Japanese dinnerware,Norwegian silverware, things like that. When I went back to Colombia, those things weghed heavily in my conscience. Later on,when I moved to the USA,I [...]

Emeralds are tears

In the Muisca mythology,Fura, the woman, and Tena, the man, were the first couple, created by the god Are. Are gave them free reign over everything, taught them, and gave them eteranl life, with the only condition that they love each other exclusively. Suddenly a foreigner arrived,Zarbi, blue eyes and blonde beard, and [...]
