And I thought I had outlived this horrible November loved/dreaded task! Last couple years were definitely too surreal to even think about writing, This year is proving to be unique as well, but I might give it a shot, between 2am and 3 am. Plenty of time!
OK, so what to do? Nicole Gustas has tips on how to win at NaNoWriMo.

# Set aside at least two hours per day to write.
# Review your calendar.
# Tell your family and friends that you’re participating in NaNoWriMo.
# Build a NaNo support network.

I am going to hide under a rock. That, or find a planet with 30 day hours!

PTB points to the three degrees of thinking that William Golding discovered early in life. I love that ability to place your mind outside of the discourse, look at the background noise, and come with a reason why.
But much more interesting is that question by Golding, “What is the truth?”, that meta-thinking that recognizes the inherent limitation of our thoughts, and dares to go further

There is still a higher grade of thought which says, “What is truth?” and sets out to find it.

But o curse, the very same act of finding fault with the world is, in itself, a form of blindness – a higher one, if you like: We find that there are other points of view, and we try to arrange the world in a logical manner – logical to us, comfortable to our biases and limits. We define the world by simply saying where our limits are.

More interesting, then, is to accept that, for all we know and devise, the world is still going to be ruled by instincts and primeval desires, and our logical fallacy is going to reveal itself in a sudden flurry of temptation, our beautiful rational logic srpinging fangs and claws with which to apprehend that reality.

Because, you see, we are the Thinker, and we are also the Venus, the leopard, the snake. And so is everybody else.

So I went. And lo and behold, the kite became the metaphor for whatever culture I was in: It was just a matter of letting go, of lifting restrictions and eliminating poisonous influences, to start writing again.

Do you think that Gaiman’s Anansi Boys is racist? Never mind, some people do.

I like that book: it is an allegory for the process of discovery, the realization that we ourselves tell our stories and discover the world according to the tales that we weave around that perceived reality, fro which we, humans, are responsible; the book presents again the story of Anansi, and while allowing the story to unfold, it also gives us back that memory of, as Llinás Angulo would say, the world we create.
The little, weak, infinitesimal spider defeats the mighty tiger through the use of stories, tales, inventions and subterfuges – but more importantly, the world is not anymore of those mighty and powerful, but of those with the ability to create the story, to tell the story according to what they need.

I loved Skunk Anansie and only now I get the meaning of the name, the weight of the stories, the enormous pain and rebellion against that which used to be:

<blockquote cite"http://www.skinmusic.net/content/music/skunk_lyrics.html#afraid">
I’ve seen behind your wall of words
You’re sneaky with the facts
Look who’s hiding now
Now I’ve seen through cracks

Go fly a kite: and in flying the kite I was allowing myself, at last, to be free of pain and thinking, letting the thread go and the kite fly on its own, while I went on walking, distractedly achieving my purpose, rewriting my story.

However, that little procrastination demon appears, and moves me to do something, or not, and hence
writer’s block. Bad block, bad!
So, it is with great glee that I present to you today Hack your way out of writer’s block, from the brilliant mind of Merlin Mann.
The list is as follows, and I write it just out of necessity to get something for myself, Mr. Merlin. I am not plagiarizing you, and I would not think about copying anybody that has such an awesome name.
Eh, back to the list:

Talk to a monkey

Do something important that’s very easy

Try freewriting

Take a walk

Take a shower; change clothes

Write from a persona

Get away from the computer; Write someplace new

Quit beating yourself up

Stretch

Add one ritual behavior

Listen to new music

Write crap

Unplug the router

Write the middle

Do one chore

Make a pointless rule

Work on the title

Write five words

Agh. Done

Now, where was I? Oh yeah, killing kittens.

Because I couldn’t go talking about writing last Sunday, and because Saleem asked for it, here is an excerpt of the NanoWriMo I am doing right now.

I live in a big city, all marble and cement and old edifices and multistoried buildings. There is almost no history left in the little corners that comprise this assemblage of human desires, yet of course it exists, it is there if you look closely enough to perceive the styles superposed one on top of the other, the multitude of materials, the buildings within buildings, surrounding them like geological accretions, like immense inorganic boas devouring smaller, unimportant buildings in this impossible maze. You can find it whenever there is roadwork of any kind, deep digging revealing a new line, an old wire left behind, the crystallized rests of a burned church, the skeletal remains of a railway system, the odd corpse complete with ancient DNA and forensic explanations. The city in itself, mute, is a museum of incredible proportions, where research is only done occasionally by a bunch of distracted reporters and commers competing for something new and exciting.

The city is as well an emotional state, the result of broadcasters intentionally or unintentionally polling the mood of the inhabitants and tourists, and then coming back to us, not precisely telling us whether we should be feeling right or wrong, exhilarated, elated or murderous. Sometimes it works, you know, we actually feel like murdering, or dancing, or having sex in our prescribed socially approved roles and customs. The city decrees our desires and repulsions, and one fad quickly becomes an undesirable trait. You survive only by taking on just a few of them, not committing to any of the possibilities. You like coffee? It kills you. Painting your face? Mocking primitive cultures. Body expression becomes regression to preverbal times. The city balances itself thus, in this highly bipolar dance of fashion, testing possibilities and keeping busy the flea markets and antique sellers.

The city is also a gigantic rehab clinic where everybody is continuously falling off the wagon, a trail of bodies with failed intentions as long as the years, and new addictions surging up with generosity: every thought laden with anger engenders a possible tranquilizers, every sad one requires stimulants, and meanwhile our precious time and income evaporates following the trail of consciousness that our desires leave in the counter of the local clinic, just before being declared incompetent. No wonder, then, that the most respected professions are medicine and law.

Cittites are not all that misfunctional, some of them are even my friends. You can always see them coming your way, brandishing their electronic iron weapons, calling for connectivity, invading your spectrum-space with their emissions, yells, grunts, moans, one-sided conversations and the occasional music, all blended together outside this reality in a virtual universe that we all carry in the pockets of our fashion-shirts, our comms, touchies and sats being the only thing that makes this social cacophony even bearable, even remotely sensical.

There. Back to writing.
Glossary: Cittites are the hordes of barbarians that live in the cities; word modelled after the Hittites.

Off to the Nanowrimo, with the excellent group that Ctoole has organized this year. I know that one of the people there has already in excess of 8000 words!
What to write that you don’t know already? Basically, that I am getting ideas about civilization and culture, technology and participation.
You will see heavy influence from my techie side, but politics will definitely show its ugly yet ubiquitous head.
